I started writing songs when I was really young, although they were rubbish of course! I first played a song that I had composed when I was fourteen and my music teachers at Kingsley were really supportive and encouraged me to perform live, which I did a few times whilst at the school. It was only two years ago that I played my first out of school gig in Liverpool after winning the Yamaha Make It Break It national song writing competition, in front of about 300 people. I felt awful and sick before I went on but as soon as I started singing it all went away. I really realised for the first time how much I enjoyed performing and that that’s what I want to do with my life. I don’t ever want to be stuck doing a job I don’t really want... I think the only job I’ll be truly happy in is in being a singer songwriter.
I look up to lots of female singer songwriters such as Liz Phair, KT Tunstall, Laura Marling and Regina Spektor. I’ve also been influenced by all the music my parents used to listen to when I was growing up like Simply Red and Tracy Chapman. Winning Make It Break It was such an amazing opportunity; to perform in front of so many people and do workshops with people who know what they’re talking about; it also put me in valuable contact with people in the business.
